Frances Walker: Coastal Glimpses 7The site of the new Ayr hospital is set inland amidst the green rolling South Ayrshire landscape allowing fine wide sweeping panoramic vistas culminating in glimpses of the coast and sea. Because of the familiarity of that coast to South Ayrshire residents from early childhood onwards, I felt these 'Coastal Glimpses' could provide a calm contemplative and appropriate series of simple images for the possibly apprehensive 'pre op' patients in the Day

For this he embarked on a mid-summer voyage on board the oldest sailing ship operational the 'Maria Assumpta'

focusing on time – all the while seeming as casual as Fanny Craddock whisking up a meringue

a quarantine and a foundry and accommodation for the workers who built the Forth Rail Bridge under whose shadow it sits

and then I remembered the large screen beds at Peacock (where I had been working for several years) and the idea of screen printing the whole thing in sections arrived

This print was part of the 'Voyage Round the Coast of Scotland' project in which contemporary Scottish artists were invited to revisit the coastline depicted by the artist William Daniel in the Scottish section of his circumnavigation of the British  Coast in 'A Voyage Round the Coast of Great Britain'
