Vistaite Jasper Cabochon 42ctThe rarest of jaspers, Vistaite is an old stock mined out stone from a ridge above Walton Lake, in the Ochoco Mountains, Oregon. The deposit has been extinct for decades. Recent reports of finds have been realised to be misidentified examples of nearby Skaggs or Ochoco Green Jasper rather then Vistaite. Discovered and mined in the 60s by Oregon rock shop owners Hoot Elkins and Shirts Quant, our supplier sourced material from Hoot's daughter Judy

To our knowledge there were no large deposits of it found all those years ago

This hand cut cabochon is Disaster Peak Jasper showing a moody landscape in lovely soft greys and rich brown

These pieces often contain large fractures making this material more difficult cut and orientate when trying to find a part of the slab that shows the finished piece in the best possible way

The name Disaster Peak comes from the summit's tragic history where a confrontation between prospectors and the Paiutes resulted in the deaths of 4 people in 1864
